At IFPRI’s 40th Anniversary celebration in 2015, Professor and Honorary Dean of the National School of Development, Peking University in China, Justin Yifu Lin, provided some insights on China's economic growth and its impact on food security and food safety. He also shared the vital role IFPRI plays in ensuring food security in China and worldwide.
“IFPRI will provide some of the knowledge from past research and complete the new challenges with research in the future. And, we can come back to IFPRI continuously” in addressing food safety and food security issues, in China and around the world."
Over the past 30 years, China’s economic reforms have led to significant economic growth and poverty reduction, including major progress in decreasing the income gap between urban and rural populations. In 2003, working with Chinese partners IFPRI developed a strategy to its work in China and expanded its national program. In the same year, IFPRI established the International Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (ICARD) in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) to coordinate the pro-poor research and related activities in China.
Through its office based at CAAS, IFPRI continues to partner with Chinese institutions and universities in agricultural research and development, public investment, food subsidies, commercialization of agriculture, social safety net programs, rural-urban linkages, water policy, climate change, and green growth.
