“Research can do great to have an impact…What makes the CGIAR different from the academic world is the fact that we plug research into action, into impact.”
Roberto Ridolfi, Director for Sustainable Growth and Development for the European Commission Directorate General for Development and Cooperation (EuropeAID), emphasized the vital role research has in eliminating hunger and undernutrition during IFPRI’s 40th Anniversary event in 2015.
IFPRI has partnered with the European Commission (EC) for many years championing food security, nutrition, and sustainable and productive agriculture. Since 2006, the EC has committed €1 billion of its budget every year to strengthen and support global food security and sustainable agriculture. In fact, with the 2008 adoption of the €1 billion Food Facility program, the EC was the first donor to proactively address the global food price crisis of 2007-08, allowing for rapid responses to counter the negative effects on the lives of those in developing countries.
The EC’s support and partnership helped to ensure that IFPRI’s research remains responsive and innovative. Over the years, IFPRI and the EC partnered on cutting-edge research in areas such as climate change; biofuels; and the nexus of agriculture, nutrition, and health. Through this partnership, IFPRI teamed up with strategic European partners in civil society, academia, and public sector, to make food security research accessible through the development of global public goods, capacity-building networks, and technological platforms.
