Canada has long championed food security, nutrition, and sustainable and productive agriculture. Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) was one of IFPRI’s founding partners and provided its first grant of US$2 million in 1975. Today, this partnership between IFPRI and IDRC continues to contribute to innovations in agriculture.
IDRC supported the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) and its research on agriculture-associated diseases in Southeast Asia. IDRC also invested on understanding the intersection of HIV/AIDS and food and nutrition security in Africa, and how food and nutrition policies can be responsive to people affected by HIV/AIDS. More recently, IFPRI and IDRC have dedicated their work to gender and women’s empowerment, more specifically the impact of agricultural development interventions and technologies on women’s empowerment. With a shared objective to increase knowledge, innovation and solutions to ensure food and nutrition security in developing countries, IFPRI and IDRC will continue to advance global agricultural development.
Jean Lebel, President of IDRC, expressed how IDRC values IFPRI and its contributions to agriculture, food security and health in a video message for IFPRI’s 40th Anniversary event.
“IDRC has a closer relationship with IFPRI since its inception…40 years after, IFPRI is recognized as the world leader when it comes to talk about research and policy influence.”
