Motivation In most of Asia, irrigation plays a key role in food production, employment generation, and agricultural and economic growth. Increasing water scarcity in Asia has raised concerns about how agriculture will share this valuable resource with rapidly growing industries and urban centers. For decades, IFPRI's leading research helped build evidence to support policies and programs that advance food security and poverty alleviation in Asia. Despite poverty rates falling by more than half, driven partly by strong agricultural growth and favorable food policies, Asia remains a global hotspot of poverty with its poorest people concentrated in rural areas, where they depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. In addition, the region now suffers from the triple burden of undernutrition, micronutrient malnutrition, and obesity. To address these barriers to food and nutrition security, IFPRI and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) collaborated on projects that focus on increasing micronutrients and improving nutrition, investing in irrigation, reducing hunger through policy dialogues, and providing access to financing for the poor.
